Fenugreek is an aromatic plant of the family Papilionaceae, as the sweetclover, with which it is often confused.
Originally from the Middle East, the trigonelle has invaded all around the Mediterranean and China.
Fenugreek was used to feed horses in antiquity, hence its name "Greek hay" (foenum-graecum). It still is in India.
There is written evidence of its existence in an Egyptian papyrus dating back to 1500 BC. JC, where it is described its use to treat burns.
Like many spices, the Egyptians also used it to embalm their dead and cast out evil spirits.
